how-to-buy-sunscreenAre you planning to go on a beach and considering buying a sunscreen. Do you have all the necessary information about sunscreens? Do you have information on all the choices available in the market? Do you know which sunscreen is best for you? You must remember that making a wrong choice not only be costly but also less effective. Here are few pointers that you should know about sunscreen which will prove beneficial.

SPF:

This is the first thing that you should look before buying a sunscreen. SPF is sun protection factor which is basically the level of protection that sunscreen provides. A SPF 15 means the sunscreen will protect you 15 times longer than without it. If you are planning for whole day outside, you must wear sunscreen with high SPF like 30, 45, 60, and 75. If you are going outside for water sport, make sure that your sunscreen is water resistance.

Skin Type:

The second thing that you should consider before buying a sunscreen is your own skin type. The people with light or fair screen tend to get more easily burn compared to dark skin people. So if you are fair skinned, it is advisable to wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more. Select a sunscreen that does not block skin pores if you are prone to acne or pimples. Take a test patch on your skin to confirm if the sunscreen is not allergic.

Broad spectrum:

Make sure your sunscreen is labelled as “broad spectrum”. It will help you get sun protection from a large range of UVA and UVB rays.

Expiry date:

Check for expiry date of any sunscreen before applying it. The sunscreen starts to lose its protective power with time as its ingredient start to separate and changes colour.

Ingredients:

Avoid purchasing sunscreen containing oxybenzone or benzoylmethanes. They do absorb UVA rays of sun but they are rated as “high hazard” by Skin Deep Cosmetic Database of EWG. These chemical can trigger allergic reaction and can cause low sperm count in men. Zinc oxide effectively blocks UVA radiation and does not cause any adverse effect on skin. It also has skin healing properties. The down side of zinc-oxide is it contains large particles and look like a paste over skin when applied.

Other things to know:

  • Apply sunscreen around 30 minutes prior to going outside.
  • Do not apply sunscreen over infants of age below 6 months. Instead keep them covered or out of sun.
  • It does not mean that sunscreen will surely safeguard you against cancer so the best thing is avoid as much sun exposure as you can.
  • Avoid spray sunscreens. Though they are convenient and feel less greasy on screen but they cause more skin problems.

Hi Ramnivas,

I am more of a fan of spray sunscreens because, as what you said, it feels less greasy but I'm glad to have read your post. I wasn't aware that it can cause skin problems though I would be happy if you can elaborate more on that part (i.e. what skin problems). Thanks, I enjoyed reading your post.

Acne vulgaris, simply known as acne, is a skin condition which causes seborrhea, comedones, pustules, papules, nodules and scarring. It mainly affects the face, neck, upper chest and back as these are the places that are densely populated by sebaceous follicles. Acne in its severest form can be inflammatory. The general presumption is that acne occurs during the adolescence but, more often than not, adults also suffer from this skin disease. The major reason for acne during the adolescence is due to the rise in the testosterone hormone levels. Stress and poor diet plan may also contribute to this problem...
