puffy-eyesPuffy eyes or Periorbital puffiness is swelling that occurs around the eye and is caused due to the swelling of the tissues that surround the eye. The swelling is due to the buildup of fluid and if it is minor, it is mostly undetectable. But if the swelling is more then it will be clearly visible and can also cause irritation.

The tissues that are present in the orbits of the eye are the ones that are affected by the fluid buildup and usually tend to reduce in a few hours. As the skin that is present around the eye is very thin and as it has a lot of blood vessels it is considered to be very sensitive.

Causes of Puffy eyes

There are a lot of causes for puffiness under eyes and it can be due to allergies, hereditary or lack of sleep. Fluid retention stress, hormonal changes, oversleeping, alcohol and crying are considered to be some of the usual causes of puffiness under the eye. Some of the medical causes that cause puffy eyes are hypothyroidism, Trichinosis, Chagas disease, Periorbital cellulitis, Mononeucleosis and Nephrotic syndrome. Many people do get puffy eyes and there are many ways in which you can reduce that. But one has to be careful as the area around the eyes is very thin and is very delicate. Therefore one has to use products that are gentle around the eyes.

Ways to reduce puffiness under eyes

  1. A very common method is to splash cold water on to the face when you get up in the morning. This will dilate the vessels of the skin and will shrink the pores immediately reducing the puffiness under the eye.
  2. Another option involves the use of cucumber and you will have to freeze the cucumber slices before using them. Lie down and prop your head up using a pillow and place the frozen cucumber slices over your eyes for about 10 minutes. This will help reduce the puffy eyes
  3. There are eye patches available in the market that will help you to reduce puffiness and dark circles. You can use these patches as they are known to be effective.
  4. There are eye creams that have a base that contain rosemary or herbal mint. Applying these creams will help reduce puffiness under the eye
  5. Dip cotton balls or a cold rag in an ice bath and apply that to the face for about 10 to 15 minutes to help reduce puffiness.
  6. Tea is said to have anti irritant properties and therefore you can use tea bags to help reduce the puffiness around the eyes. Place moist tea bags over your eyes to get relief. Place the tea bags in hot water first for a few minutes and then keep them aside to ring them to room temperature before placing it over your eye.
  7. Potatoes are also effective like cucumbers in treating puffy eyes. Take a medium sized potato and then peel it. Wash the potato, dry it and grate it. Put the grated potato in a clean cloth and tie it up. Place this over your eyes for a few minutes and repeat the process a few times.
  8. Take a glass of warm water and add half a teaspoon of salt in it. Mix it properly and soak cotton balls or wool eye pads in them. Place the pads or cotton balls over the eyes for a few minutes to help reduce puffiness. Make sure that the water is not too hot and just about warm.
