Getting The Correct Nutrition When You Are Pregnant

It is very important for all of us to stay fit and healthy, getting the right amount of exercise and also eating a nutritional diet is essential to maintain our health. This is even more so when you are pregnant and are expecting a child. Eating a well balanced nutritious diet is not only good for you but it will also help to keep you feeling better as well with all of the changes that are taking place in your body.
As soon as people hear the word “diet” they automatically think of bland food and salad, but this does not need to be the case. There are plenty of foods you can eat within a balanced diet which are not only good for you but taste great as well. Below is listed some of the foods groups which you require to eat healthily.
Fruit and Vegetables:
Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is a great way to get much needed vitamins and minerals into our body. As well as this it is also a great source of fiber which we all need plenty of as well. Fiber helps the digestive system and also helps to cure constipation as well by keeping bowel movements regular. It is recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of fruit or vegetables a day. Some great ones for pregnant women are as follows;
Starch & Carbohydrates:
Starchy foods can also be a great source of fiber as well as vitamins and minerals. These are foods such as bread, rice, pasta or potatoes and they can go a long way on satisfying your hunger without containing too many calories. Breakfast cereal such as cornflakes is an excellent choice as it is good for you and you also take in a lot of milk as well. This means you body is getting a lot of calcium and other minerals and they do taste really good as well. Just do not put too much sugar on them though!
Protein is another important part of our diet which should be consumed on a daily basis. Protein can be found in lots of different foods such as Meat, Fish, Poultry, Eggs, Beans and Nuts. Protein is essential for the building and repairing of tissue within the body, something which is even more important when you are pregnant. When choosing meat you should try and eat meat that has very little fat on it and always make sure that it is cooked properly when you are pregnant. There are some foods which you should avoid or be very careful of when you are pregnant;
- Unpasteurised milk
- Cold cured meats
- Uncooked eggs
If you accidentally eat a small amount of any of the above then it should not cause any major problems, although if you start to become ill then consult a doctor straight away.
Dairy foods are a great source of calcium and other nutrients which is excellent for both you and your unborn child. Cheese, Milk, Fromage Frais and Yogurt not only taste great, but of you eat the lower fat varieties then they can also be good for you as well. You should aim to eat two or three portions a day, but there are some cheeses which need to be avoided when you are pregnant. These are the soft cheeses or the mould ripened cheese such as Brie or Danish Blue. The standard Cheddar cheese is fine although as previously mentioned you should try and choose low fat varieties.
Sugars and Fats:
Although we do need some sugar and fats n our diets, we need to make sure that we do not eat too much of them. Remember that when you are pregnant, the more weight you put on during your pregnancy, the more weight you have to lose after you baby is born to get back to you normal weight. If you put on too much weight then you will have to look for some cheap maternity clothes online in order to get clothes to fit your expanding waistline. This does not mean that you cannot have your favorite chocolate or biscuits though, just eat them in moderation and use them as an occasional treat. If you can take care of yourself by getting exercise and eating correctly, then you are giving your unborn child the best possible start in life by keeping both them and yourself healthy.
