Though it is not very serious problem and there are many home remedies for cracked heels,  but knowing the causes of it make you able to avoid it. There are many causes behind developing cracked heels some of which are described below.

 

Dry skin:

Dry cracked heels often result due to dry skin. Rough dry skin is more prone to crack rather than smooth moisturized skin. Skin may also become dry due to weather condition. Dry winter air or lower humidity can take out moisture from the skin and make it dry. Bathing with hard soap can also make your skin dry. Taking frequent warm bath can also cause dry skin.

Medical condition:

Some medical condition like thyroid disease, diabetes can make skin dry and cracked heel. Diabetes damages nerve cells in the leg which interfere with the body ability to sweet. Some skin disease like psoriasis or eczema may also be culprit. Psoriasis can cause thick scales on heel which become susceptible to cracking.

Excess weight:

The heel started splitting when they could not cope with the stress and pressure applied on them. Pregnant women or obsess people are more prone to cracked heel. Working most of the time barefoot can also result in cracked heel. Not wearing shoes with proper cushioning support on heels can increase this problem manifold.

Deficiency of vitamins:

Deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals can cause dry cracked heels. Deficiency of vitamin a, zinc and omega fatty-3 acids causes cracked heels.

Age:

Age is another factor behind cracked heel. Cracked heel is more common in aged people compared to younger one. With age skin natural elastic power diminishes and any pressure on skin make it cracked.

While one of the main causes of dry, cracking skin is the arid winter air, other factors can impact heels. Common problems that contribute to heel fissures include but are not limited to:

Age
Psoriasis or other skin-related conditions
Diabetes
Kidney disease
Thyroid disease
Vitamin deficiency
Excess weight
